Checkpoint in Washoe County nets 3 DUI arrests

SPARKS, Nev.—A checkpoint in Washoe County over the weekend resulted in 3 arrests for driving under the influence and nearly two dozen citations for seat belt violations. The Sparks Police Department, Washoe County sheriff's office and the Nevada Highway Patrol conducted a five-hour DUI checkpoint on Pyramid Highway on Sunday.
More than 2,000 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Officers also handed out five child restraint citations and 12 citations for no insurance.
The highway patrol said there were three DUI checkpoints scheduled for the holiday weekend.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety secured grant money to fund staffing for the checkpoints.

Statewide DUI task force arrests 220 over holiday

PHOENIX (AP) - A statewide DUI task force has netted 220 suspected drunk drivers so far over the holiday weekend.
The Governor's Office of Highway Traffic Safety said 325 officers and deputies participated in the statewide task force.
At least 70 drivers were arrested for extreme DUI, 29 for aggravated driving under the influence and 191 for misdemeanor DUI.
At least 19 underage drivers were arrested for DUI.
Since Thursday, various police agencies have made 2,713 traffic stops.
Law enforcement officers will be conducting saturation patrols, sobriety checkpoints and youth alcohol enforcement statewide through the weekend.
